Men & Women's Health

Both women and men are faced with their own set of unique challenges in the process of staying healthier longer and increasing the quality of their life aka “health span”. However, there are some common diseases that men and women share.

Low Testosterone or “Low T Syndrome”

Raising testosterone has been shown to significantly benefit:

*Libido*Strength*Brain Function*Sexual Performance
*Energy*Heart Disease*Endurance*Reduction in Abdominal Fat
*Mood*Muscle tone*Bone Density*Human Performance
*Memory*Metabolism*Insulin Sensitivity*Overall Well-being

Natural Cholesterol Control—-Reducing Heart Attack and Stroke Risk

Over 80% of the body’s cholesterol is produced by the liver where less than 20 % comes from diet. Thus, maintaining healthy liver function by proper nutrition, reduction in toxin intake, routine liver detox, good digestion of vitamins, and hormone balance will be the best way to control a cholesterol level naturally. It helps us to prevent common diseases as we grow older.

Osteoporosis

Essential bone nutrients such as Vitamin K, calcium, zinc, boron, magnesium, Vitamin D, etc may not be digested into the bloodstream. Or if they are digested into the bloodstream, the nutrients must have a strong hormone signal. Hormones are the often overlooked key to getting the nutrients INTO the bone and preventing Osteoporosis. Hormones such as DHEA, testosterone, human growth hormone (HGH), cortisol, and thyroid need to be at optimized to ensure bone building. To avoid common diseases like osteoporosis, taking calcium supplements is highly recommended. It prevents osteoporotic fractures in our bodies.

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

Blood pressure can be lowered with reducing contractility of the blood vessel and reducing vascular inflammation. Treatments include:

NutraceuticalsHormone Replacement TherapyHerbs
Stress managementRestoring sleep qualityDetox & Chelation
Nutritional deficiencyCorrecting food allergiesExercise

Our Focus is getting to the root cause of symptoms and treating them with natural solutions before disease sets in.

Men’s Health

The main health issues facing men today are:

Heart AttacksDiabetesHypertensionHeart Failure
StrokeHigh CholesterolDementiaFatigue
OsteoporosisWeight GainProstate CancerLow Testosterone

Prostate Cancer Risk and Testosterone:

New England Journal of Medicine discovered in 2004 that high estrogen levels combined with low testosterone that leads to prostate cancer. The prevailing theory is that the prostate expands in size, increasing its vascular supply ,in an attempt to deliver more testosterone from the blood to the prostate gland.

Heart Disease & Stroke:

Medical studies show that if estrogen levels are too high and testosterone too low, the risk of having a stroke or coronary artery disease is doubled.

Women’s Health

The female body is constantly undergoing change beginning with puberty and eventually with perimenopause and menopause. For many women, pregnancy brings additional changes thus making them prone to such common diseases. From menstrual cycles, mood swings, and weight changes to hot flashes and insomnia, women experience a variety of symptoms as their bodies transform and hormones fluctuate. There are built-in systems to combat these challenges, but with the cumulative effects of poor diet, chronic stress, lack of sleep, and sedentary lifestyle as well as environmental toxins- hormone levels can get thrown out of sync. Below is a graph that demonstrates the rise and fall of estrogen and progesterone throughout a typical woman's life.

PMS (PreMenstrual Syndrome):

PMS is one of the many common diseases that a woman experiences. It involves a variety of symptoms tied to a woman’s menstrual cycle that can be improved with herbs, supplements, reversing nutritional deficiencies, improving digestion, hormone therapy, and customized detoxification.

PCOS (PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome):

This complex endocrine disorder can cause weight gain, menstrual irregularity, acne, hair growth, and decreased quality of life. Often, control of PCOS (or PCO) can be achieved with improved insulin sensitivity and by addressing estrogen dominance, thyroid hormone resistance, Leptin resistance, digestion, acupuncture and detoxification.

Recurrent Vaginal Yeast Infections & Urinary Tract Infections (UTI):

Often the key to decreasing the risk of yeast infections or UTIs is to improve vaginal pH via diet, detoxification, herbs, hormone balance, and improved digestive bacterial flora.

Interstitial Cystitis & Urinary Incontinence:

One of the treatments for these bladder and pelvic support structure problems (especially in peri- or postmenopausal women) is Bioidentical Hormone Therapy (testosterone or estrogen) or herbal therapy.

Menopause

This is a time in a woman’s life when her hormone levels drop. It is well known that without hormonal support, the brain, bones, heart, joints, skin, mood and most importantly, quality of life are put at risk. Treatment includes: acupuncture, Bio-identical Hormone Replacement therapy or herbal therapies. Common symptoms are:

Weight gainDifficulty sleepingHot flashes
FatigueMood swingsVaginal dryness
Headaches / MigrainesNight sweatsLoss of libido

Breast Cancer:

Keeping progesterone and estrogen levels balanced is vital to preventing estrogen dominance, which may be one of the most causative factors in breast cancer. Progesterone protects breast cells from multiplying rapidly, however, a woman’s progesterone levels start declining in the late 30’s. By the time a woman reaches menopause, her ovaries have stopped producing adequate quantities of protective hormones. This is when women are at greatest risk for breast cancer. However, most breast cancer occurs without any risk factors being present. Therefore, every woman should protect herself from breast cancer by balancing her hormones, exercising, maintaining a healthy diet and good nutrition, avoiding alcohol and taking an active role in controlling her environmental risks from pesticides, plastics and toxins.

Thermography or Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI) is a screening tool for physiologic cellular health. It is most commonly used for Breast Cancer screening where breast thermography has an FDA approval for screening and diagnosis. Thermography produces an infrared image that shows the patterns of heat and blood flow near the surface of the body. This is very different than other modalities such as Mammography, MRI, and ultrasounds that are useful for anatomical or structural analysis. Merge Medical Center does breast thermography as well as whole body thermography in Charleston at our office.

Can you tell which woman has a developing breast cancer that can be detected EARLY by breast thermography and may be missed by mammography?

Healthy Breast Warning Signs

In addition to breast cancer screening, thermography can be utilized for analysis of other conditions including the following:
