We have been offering Colonics at Merge Medical Center since 2016. We offer the “Open” method of colonics, which is safe, effective, and much less daunting than the old-fashioned “Closed” method of colonics
The patient lies down on a treatment bed and inserts a small, lubricated tube into the rectum about 2 inches. The tube is made of soft, flexible plastic with a rounded tip, about the size of a pinky finger. You don't even feel it once it is in there, and it is not painful to insert. Then you cover up with a sheet, press the buzzer, and we'll come in to turn the water on. It's a very gentle flow of warm, filtered water that fills your colon, and then you push it out. This process repeats itself over the 30-45 minute session. Suppose the patient so chooses for additional effect during the treatment. In that case, our therapist will assist in the release of the feces by massaging pressure points on the feet or abdomen.

The Two VERY Different Methods of Colonic Irrigation Therapy
Patients love that our “open” system can self-administer in privacy. It makes the process of colonics a lot less daunting. Our staff can assist you if you press the buzzer at any stage during your session. You can feel safe that help and professional advice are available if required. Most people prefer to be left alone during colonics, though – as they feel pooing is a private process!
In Contrast, for the “Closed” system, it can be very embarrassing to bear your butt to a stranger and have them insert a large speculum. Then be there with me while you are having an enormous poo. Colonics is all about letting go. So the more you relax into the process, the more water you allow yourself to complete the cleaning process. The less likely you are to experience cramping and other side effects. We chose to have “Open” over the “Closed” Colonic system.
The water used in the “Open” method is gravity fed, so there’s no pressure. It makes it safer than the “Closed” method, where the practitioner pumps you full of water to the pressure they deem appropriate. In the “Open” method, you will feel when you’re full and naturally push out then, rather than rely on the therapist’s judgment. The “Open” method is also safer when putting the tube inside yourself. So that you will feel the right angle, etc., and, of course, will stop and seek assistance if there is any discomfort. It helps to prevent any damage to the rectal opening. Also, the tube used in “Open” colonics is small, soft, and flexible, unlike the hard, rigid speculum used in “Closed” colonics.
Yes. In fact, with our colon hydrotherapy system called Angel of Water, sessions are much safer and easier than the common enema.
An enema only reaches the lower section of the colon and rectum, whereas with colon hydrotherapy the entire length of the colon is reached and it is many more times effective.

The small intestine is not specifically involved; however, the small intestine may be cleansed with the help of an oral intestinal cleanser that we can provide after the session at request.
If you have a concern about your health or the appropriateness of colon hydrotherapy for you, you can consult with our physician or licensed health practitioner. Contraindications for the use of the Angel of Water include, but may not be limited to: recent colon, rectal or abdominal surgery, congestive heart failure, intestinal perforations, carcinoma of the rectum, fissures or fistula, severe hemorrhoids, abdominal hernia, renal insufficiency, first or last trimester of pregnancy and cirrhosis of the liver. Professionally administered colon hydrotherapy is otherwise very safe.
The Angel of Water system uses single-use, sterile rectal nozzles. The use of sterile disposables coupled with the implementation of the Angel of Water’s multi-stage sanitation protocol with EPA registered disinfectants leaves no danger of contamination.
Actual session time is about 30-40 minutes, but you should plan on about 1 ½ hours for your first consultation with session.
No. Some consider it a good time to have a session since your body is already cleansing. Your menstrual flow will not interfere with the success of the session. However, some women prefer to wait until after their period is over to do a cleansing session.
Refrain from eating about 2 hours before the cleansing, be as relaxed as possible and maintain a positive, cheerful attitude.
Usually not, but everyone is different. Some report a slight feeling of tiredness, but this is similar to the feeling you have after exercising vigorously. After a session, sipping warm liquids is usually very soothing. If you have concerns,consult with your colon hydrotherapist.
